Surah 80: ‘Abasa
عبس
Ayah 1
He [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ AAabasa watawalla — 🔊
Ayah 2
Because there came to him the blind man [interrupting].
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ An jaahu al-aAAma — 🔊
Ayah 3
But what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified1
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka — 🔊
Ayah 4
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu aththikra — 🔊
Ayah 5
As for he who thinks himself without need
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ Amma mani istaghna — 🔊
Ayah 6
To him you give attention.
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ Faanta lahu tasadda — 🔊
Ayah 7
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka — 🔊
Ayah 8
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ Waamma man jaaka yasAAa — 🔊
Ayah 9
While he fears [Allāh],
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ Wahuwa yakhsha — 🔊
Ayah 10
From him you are distracted.
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ Faanta AAanhu talahha — 🔊
Ayah 11
No! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ Kalla innaha tathkira — 🔊
Ayah 12
So whoever wills may remember it
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ Faman shaa thakarah — 🔊
Ayah 13
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,
فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ Fee suhufin mukarrama — 🔊
Ayah 14
Exalted and purified,
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ MarfooAAatin mutahhara — 🔊
Ayah 15
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ Bi-aydee safara — 🔊
Ayah 16
Noble and dutiful.
كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ Kiramin barara — 🔊
Ayah 17
Destroyed [i.e., cursed] is man;1 how disbelieving is he.
قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ Qutila al-insanu ma akfarah — 🔊
Ayah 18
From what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?
مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ Min ayyi shay-in khalaqah — 🔊
Ayah 19
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;1
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah — 🔊
Ayah 20
Then He eased the way for him;1
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ Thumma assabeela yassarah — 🔊
Ayah 21
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ Thumma amatahu faaqbarah — 🔊
Ayah 22
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ Thumma itha shaa ansharah — 🔊
Ayah 23
No! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ Kalla lamma yaqdi maamarah — 🔊
Ayah 24
Then let mankind look at his food -
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ Falyanthuri al-insanuila taAAamih — 🔊
Ayah 25
How We poured down water in torrents,
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا Anna sababna almaasabba — 🔊
Ayah 26
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqa — 🔊
Ayah 27
And caused to grow within it grain
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا Faanbatna feeha habba — 🔊
Ayah 28
And grapes and herbage
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا WaAAinaban waqadba — 🔊
Ayah 29
And olive and palm trees
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا Wazaytoonan wanakhla — 🔊
Ayah 30
And gardens of dense shrubbery
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا Wahada-iqa ghulba — 🔊
Ayah 31
And fruit and grass -
وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا Wafakihatan waabba — 🔊
Ayah 32
[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum — 🔊
Ayah 33
But when there comes the Deafening Blast1
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ Fa-itha jaati assakhkha — 🔊
Ayah 34
On the Day a man will flee from his brother
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ Yawma yafirru almaro min akheeh — 🔊
Ayah 35
And his mother and his father
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ Waommihi waabeeh — 🔊
Ayah 36
And his wife and his children,
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ Wasahibatihi wabaneeh — 🔊
Ayah 37
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him
لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithinsha/nun yughneeh — 🔊
Ayah 38
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfira — 🔊
Ayah 39
Laughing, rejoicing at good news.
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ Dahikatun mustabshira — 🔊
Ayah 40
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayhaghabara — 🔊
Ayah 41
Blackness will cover them.
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ Tarhaquha qatara — 🔊
Ayah 42
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajara — 🔊
